“Gabrielle, Chapter 1: The Magpie”

"Gabrielle, Chapter 1: The Magpie" introduces a striking blend of myth and modern life, following a writer whose fictional tale of the sword-wielding Allysa and her quest with the Avatar Gabri-el unfolds alongside chilling real-world parallels. Written by Kristen Brennan and illustrated by Jacob Saariaho, the story blurs the line between creation and reality as the writer’s fanzine editor—Baal, the mysterious stalker behind the Dark Sanctum—begins closing in on her, drawn to her not just as a writer but as a person. Cover by Joseph Michael Linsner captures the eerie intimacy of this unfolding tension, all in a free 1995 release from Jitterbug Press.

A female writer publishes stories about her sword-wielding alter ego, Allysa (the Untamed), who travels with the Avatar, Gabri-el, and hunts and kills Baal's soldiers to protect the Seraphim, Caige, turned to stone by the Old Gods. A personal journal entry reveals that Baal (stalker of the female writer), editor of fanzine Dark Sanctum, is the person to whom she has been submitting these stories. Once Baal locates the writer, he finds out she works at Burger Shack and gets a job there to get close to her.
