“Witches' Keep”

By issue #180 of Marvel's long-running sword-and-sorcery series, John Buscema — penciling and inking the cover solo — delivers a battleground scene brimming with kinetic energy: Conan charges forward wielding a broad-bladed axe, red cloak streaming behind him, while fallen and fighting warriors scatter across a sandy slope flanked by towering stone columns wrapped in vines. The title "Witches' Keep" promises something darker and more arcane waiting beyond that chaotic melee. A fine 1986 entry for any fan of Robert E. Howard's Cimmerian in his Marvel years.
