Al had been engaged to Ana and her father had expected him to take over the family factory after they married. But when Al innocently met Mara and became friends with her, Ana became very jealous. After one such argument, he went to Mara's apartment to talk it out with his friend. But Ana arrived and, seeing them together, assumed the worst. She ran out into the street and Mara tried to chase her to explain, but was struck by a car. After waiting in the clinic, the doctor tells Al and Ana that Mara's outlook is very grim and Al is furious at Ana for Mara's condition.
