After Francis catches Edith with another man, he starts abusing alcohol and eventually wakes up in a hospital. At the hospital he meets Helen, who lost the ability to walk years ago after witnessing her mother drown when she was unable to help her because she couldn't swim. He becomes very fond of Helen and plans to continue seeing her. When he is released from the hospital, he discovers he has inherited great wealth from an uncle who lived in New York. Edith learns that Francis is rich and pretends to be his sister in an attempt to get Helen to give him up.
