In the 16th century Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia marched with his men south from Peru, through the Atacama Desert into southern Chile where he met stiff resistance from the warlike tribes of Araucanians (Mapuche) which had recently united and chosen Caupolican as their leader. Both de Valdivia and then Caupolican were eventually both captured and killed.
