About this Collection

This volume from Acclaim/Valiant's 1997 revival of the Classics Illustrated series adapts Herman Melville's epic novel Moby Dick into comic form, accompanied by supplementary notes and background material. The book presents the classic tale of Captain Ahab's obsessive hunt for the white whale, with the educational notes providing historical context and analysis typical of the Classics Illustrated Notes line.

"Moby Dick" in Classics Illustrated #12 (1997) brings Herman Melville’s epic tale to life with stark, dramatic art by Louis Zansky, whose bold inks and expressive lines capture the novel’s intensity. Written by Melville and Albert L. Kanter, and lettered by Fred Eng, the story follows Ishmael and Queequeg as they join Captain Ahab’s obsessive quest for the white whale, driven by vengeance and madness. Charles Wojtkiewicz’s striking cover perfectly frames the doomed voyage’s haunting tone.

Despite dire warnings, Ishmael and Queequeg sign aboard the Pequod to sail under Captain Ahab. Obsessed to kill the whale that took his leg, Ahab drives the crew in pursuit of Moby Dick despite sense, safety, appeals to humanity, or the pleadings of first mate Starbuck. The final confrontation kills the whale and destroys the ship. Ishmael alone escapes, and the sea rolls on.
