Esteban had told Carlota he had something urgent to resolve and would return to Spain in six months. He didn't say why and after four months without hearing anything from him, she was alarmed. She sought out his best friend, a doctor, and eventually learned that Esteban had gone to India to undergo an experimental operation for leukemia. Esteban died four days after the operation. A year later, she asks to become a nurse at the doctor's clinic.
