A businessman named Tom agrees to borrow money from a bank on a business basis to invest with his wife Barbara, requiring a lawyer to draw up an agreement stating he will pay her back in full plus two percent. One year later, Tom has become successful, and his wife Barbara is now known as "Miss Meriwether of 1951," having gotten her start in studio furniture thanks to the investment. Meanwhile, a separate romantic subplot involves Clara, who has been courted by veterinarian Steve Hale but becomes entangled in complications when an old flame named Jeff reappears and interferes with Clara and Steve's relationship, ultimately leading to tension and jealousy among the three parties.
