Two battered, defiant figures press their guns against each other in a tense nighttime standoff, while a shadowy silhouette watches from a dimly lit window behind them — Dan Boultwood's cover composition crackles with mutual distrust and barely contained violence. This fifth and final chapter of "The First Course" brings John Layman and Boultwood's opening arc to a close, and if this cover is any indication, it ends with neither side ready to back down.
