The second chapter of Mark Millar and Peter Gross's three-issue Dark Horse series presents one of 2004's most quietly unsettling covers: a young man in a plaid shirt and jeans gazes directly at the viewer, one hand raised in benediction while the other reveals a glowing Sacred Heart burning on his chest. Peter Gross surrounds this modern-day Christ figure with ghostly engraving-style biblical imagery, lending the whole composition an eerie tension between the ordinary and the divine. If the first issue drew you in with its premise, this cover alone makes it clear the story is heading somewhere genuinely provocative.
