At summer camp Abby develops a friendship with Shasta, whom her other friends disdain. Shasta, who was once struck by lightning, has an independent state of mind. Odd electrical features, like ball lighting, form around her. The two develop a friendship with Teal, like them a fantasy fan; Abby re-imagines their friendships as high fantasy. Shasta, who has been refusing her required medications, is glad to be sent home. Abby deepens her romance with Teal and her friendship with the other girls. She imagines Shasta as one of those mysterious balls of light, leading her through her quest.
