About this Issue

Cat-Man Comics #11 (cover-numbered 6, indicia v1#11) holds a double distinction in Golden Age history: it is the final issue published under Helnit Publishing before the title transferred to Holyoke, making it the last book Frank Z. Temerson's Helnit imprint ever produced. At the same time, it sits at the heart of a pivotal creative moment for the Cat-Man franchise — the period in which young Katie Conn is firmly established as the Kitten, completing the hero–sidekick duo that would define the series through its 1946 conclusion. The issue also features one of the earliest Joe Kubert interior art credits in comics, a noteworthy detail for anyone tracking that hall-of-fame artist's earliest professional work.

History

By the cover date of January 1942, financial pressures had forced Frank Z. Temerson's Helnit Publishing into an arrangement with Holyoke Publishing — formerly Helnit's printer — under which Holyoke took over the indicia starting with the very next issue. Helnit's entire creative staff, anchored by artist-writer Charles Quinlan, continued producing the book without interruption, so the transition was essentially invisible to readers on the stands. The series itself had launched in May 1941 as a successor to Crash Comics Adventures, inheriting that title's volume-and-issue numbering — which is why the sixth issue off the rack carries the internal designation v1#11.

  • The issue functions as an anthology, also featuring the Ragman in 'Hell's Kitchen' (art by Allen Ulmer), The Hood in 'Der Teufel' (art by Alan Mandel), and a Phantom Falcon text story.
  • A 'Little Leaders' backup feature titled 'Agents of Nippon' stars Katie Conn (the Kitten) and Mickey, reflecting the wartime setting that dominated the series.
