About this Collection

Casper the Friendly Ghost #1 (2019, American Mythology Productions) represents the most sustained modern revival of the Harvey Comics universe in the direct-market era, arriving after decades of dormancy following Harvey's 1994 bankruptcy and the character's long journey through corporate hands — from Classic Media to DreamWorks Animation to NBCUniversal. It marked the first ongoing titled Casper series since the original Harvey run, deliberately working within the aesthetic and tonal tradition of the Harvey house style rather than rebooting or reimagining the character for a cynical modern audience. By packaging Casper, Wendy the Good Little Witch, and Hot Stuff the Little Devil together in a single all-ages anthology format, the issue reintroduced the full Harvey friendship triangle to a generation of readers who had only known the characters through the 1995 film and its direct-to-video successors. Its launch also signaled that American Mythology had secured a broad slice of the Harvey license, paving the way for a family of spin-off titles — Casper's Spooksville, Casper & Wendy, Casper & Hot Stuff — that collectively gave the Harvey stable its deepest comic-book presence in more than two decades.

History

American Mythology Productions, a Maryland-based licensed-comics publisher founded in 2014, secured the rights to publish Casper and related Harvey characters in association with DreamWorks (the rights holder at the time through its DreamWorks Classics division). The company had dipped into the Casper well as early as 2017 with a Halloween Comicfest issue and a two-issue Casper the Friendly Ghost series, then expanded its commitment with the 2019 launch of this titled ongoing series alongside a robust slate of companion mini-series. The creative team assembled for the debut — writers S.A. Check, John Gallagher, and Mike Wolfer, with interior art by John Gallagher and Bill Galvan — were drawn from the pool of licensed-comics specialists already working across American Mythology's Three Stooges, Underdog, and Laurel & Hardy titles, reflecting the publisher's philosophy of staffing its books with creators who were avowed fans of the properties first.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published in 2019 by American Mythology Productions under license from DreamWorks (DreamWorks Classics), which held the Harvey Comics character rights at the time of publication.
  • The issue contains three all-new, all-ages stories featuring Casper, Wendy the Good Little Witch, and Hot Stuff the Little Devil — the core Harvey trio — written by S.A. Check, John Gallagher, and Mike Wolfer.
  • Interior art is by John Gallagher and Bill Galvan; the book runs 32 full-color pages and was rated All Ages.
  • Five cover editions were offered: a main cover by Adrian Ropp, a Spooky variant by Mike Wolfer, a Classics cover by Bill Galvan, a Blank Sketch Cover, and a Retro Animation retailer incentive cover.
  • The issue was preceded by American Mythology's own 2017 two-issue Casper the Friendly Ghost series and a Halloween Comicfest issue, making the 2019 title a second, more ambitious launch of the ongoing franchise.
  • The 2019 debut served as the anchor for a broader expansion of American Mythology's Harvey line, which subsequently included Casper's Spooksville (4 issues, 2019–2020), Casper & Wendy, Casper & Hot Stuff, and a collected trade paperback (Casper the Friendly Ghost Vol. 1: Haunted Hijinks, November 2019).
  • The stories were crafted explicitly in the classic Harvey Comics visual and narrative tradition, continuing the long-established Harvey anthology format of short, self-contained comic strips rather than single extended narratives.
  • Casper himself originated in a 1939 children's book by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo, debuted in animation in 1945, and first appeared in Harvey Comics in 1952 — making the 2019 series the latest chapter in a publishing history spanning more than six decades.
