Captain Marvel #27 (July 1973) is the issue in which Eros — Thanos's heroic brother and future Avenger Starfox — steps fully onto the page as a speaking, active participant for the first time, graduating from a single-panel background cameo in Iron Man #55 to a plot-driving co-protagonist on Titan. It is also the third full appearance of Thanos himself, deepening the Thanos War arc that Jim Starlin was building into Marvel's first sustained, philosophically ambitious cosmic saga. By grounding the conflict in family loyalty and the specific geography of Titan, the issue gave the Thanos mythology a lived-in internal history that writers have drawn on ever since, and the characters introduced here became cornerstones of both the Infinity Gauntlet storyline and the MCU's Infinity War films decades later.

History

Jim Starlin — a Navy Vietnam veteran who had conceived Thanos from Freudian 'Thanatos' imagery during a college psychology course — had already launched the Thanos War arc when he took over Captain Marvel with issue #25 in 1973, turning a struggling title that had been on the verge of cancellation into the showcase for his cosmic vision. For issue #27 the plotting credit went to Starlin while Mike Friedrich handled the scripted dialogue, with Pablo Marcos providing the inks over Starlin's pencils; Starlin also drew and partially inked the cover. Editor-in-Chief Roy Thomas oversaw the run during a period when Marvel was actively encouraging cosmic experimentation, and Starlin would later quit the title in 1974 over disputes about inking assignments and editorial alterations — though Thomas quickly lured him back with the offer to take on Adam Warlock. The entire Thanos War run, including this issue, was later collected in Captain Marvel Masterworks Vol. 3.

First full appearance of Eros (later Starfox): having appeared only in a background panel in Iron Man #55 (Feb. 1973), Eros debuts here as a speaking, action-taking character, freeing Rick Jones alongside his father Mentor and allying with Mar-Vell against Thanos.
Third appearance of Thanos overall (following Iron Man #55 and Captain Marvel #26), continuing the Thanos War story arc that Starlin was building across multiple titles.
Second appearance of Drax the Destroyer, who cameos as Thanos races toward the location of the Cosmic Cube.
