History

After DeConnick's first Captain Marvel volume (2012–2014) wrapped following the 'Enemy Within' crossover storyline, Marvel relaunched the title in March 2014 as part of its Marvel NOW! publishing initiative, bringing DeConnick back as writer with Spanish artist David López replacing previous pencilers Dexter Soy and Emma Rios. DeConnick described the key creative shift as moving Carol out of New York City and 'letting her go cosmic,' deliberately integrating the character into the post-Infinity space-opera corner of the Marvel Universe alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy. López's somewhat grounded, realistic figure work became closely identified with Carol's look during this period, and he also provided the cover art — including a popular animal variant — for the debut issue.
