Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of the Nation-Wide Publishing version of Captain Atom — a scientist-adventurer distinct from, and predating by ten years, the Charlton Comics character of the same name created by Steve Ditko and Joe Gill.
  • Published in 1950 by Nation-Wide (also rendered 'Nationwide') Publishers as a digest-sized format book: approximately 5 inches by 7 inches, 48 pages, full color.
  • The lead character is never given a personal name in the series; 'Captain Atom' functions as both title and identity throughout.
  • Supporting cast introduced in issue #1 includes Professor King, and two younger companions named Jeff and Jill, who recur across all seven issues.
  • Issue #1 contains five stories: 'Meet Captain Atom,' 'Danger in the Pyrenees!,' 'Secret of the Columbian Jungle,' 'Race to the Finish,' and 'The Wheel That Wouldn't Stop.'
  • Each story in the series was written to teach children science concepts, with adventures built around gadgets such as a uranium amplifier, spectroscope, atom submarine, walkie-talkie television, and an atomic-powered ram rocket.
  • The series ran for seven issues (1950–1951) and is considered part of the public domain, with scans available through the Digital Comic Museum.
  • Nation-Wide's Captain Atom is historically categorized as 'Golden Age Captain Atom II,' as an earlier Australian Atlas Comics character of the same name had already appeared in 1948 — predating the Nationwide version by two years.
