History

Writer Nick Spencer and artist Jesús Saíz had been developing the Hydra-Cap twist for approximately 16 months before publication, with Marvel editorial — led by editor Tom Brevoort and associate editor Alanna Smith, under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso — taking extraordinary security measures to prevent leaks during production. The issue was designed from the start as the opening move of a planned 18-month storyline, not an isolated shock moment, though Brevoort later acknowledged on his Substack that Marvel badly underestimated the intensity of the public backlash. Spencer was simultaneously writing Captain America: Sam Wilson, making this the first time in Marvel history that two ongoing Captain America solo titles ran concurrently under the same writer. The story sprang directly out of the 'Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill' crossover, in which the sentient Cosmic Cube fragment Kobik restored Rogers to his youthful, super-powered self — but secretly rewrote his memories to make him a Hydra operative.
