History

Rick Remender was handed the title directly following Brubaker's departure as part of the broader Marvel NOW! editorial initiative, a line-wide renumbering and creative reshuffling overseen by Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, with Tom Brevoort serving as series editor. Remender himself acknowledged the weight of the assignment — following what he called 'the most popular run on Cap, ever' — and deliberately chose to sidestep comparisons by abandoning the spy-thriller mode in favor of science fiction, drawing explicit inspiration from Jack Kirby's own wildly imaginative mid-1970s work on the character. John Romita Jr. was paired on pencils with inker Klaus Janson and colorist Dean White, and the issue shipped on November 21, 2012 (cover-dated January 2013) as part of Marvel NOW! Wave One; demand was sufficient that a second printing followed in January 2013.
