Cannibale #[nn]
Adapted by Emmanuel Reuzé from Didier Daeninckx's novel, Cannibale is a striking bande dessinée that immediately announces its ambitions through its moody, blue-grey cover. Set against the towering spires of what appears to be Angkor Wat, the scene captures several figures in urgent flight across a stone causeway, with a hand thrusting a camera into the foreground and a capped man glancing back with unmistakable unease. Published by Emmanuel Proust's Atmosphères imprint in 2009, this is a handsomely produced album that pairs Reuzé's atmospheric draftsmanship with a story rooted in one of French literature's most pointed critiques of colonial exploitation.
