A tin soldier admires a paper doll. The soldier is blown off the window sill where he ends up swallowed by a fish that is caught and brought back to his original home. The boy of the house decides he doesn't want the dirty soldier and throws it into the fire. The wind blows the paper doll into the fire and they perish together. Freckles, a little boy who is the narrator, then tells a version of the tale that has a happier ending.
