Brit #1
Brit #1 (August 2007) marks the transition of Robert Kirkman's indestructible super-soldier from a trilogy of black-and-white one-shots into a full-color ongoing series — the first sustained spotlight the character ever received in his own monthly title. As a satellite book in Kirkman's shared Invincible universe, it functioned as a proving ground for the wider Image superhero line at a moment when Kirkman was simultaneously building The Walking Dead and Invincible into major franchises. The series deepened the character in ways the one-shots couldn't, eventually revealing the full origin of Brit's invulnerability and expanding his family, which made this issue the narrative foundation for everything that followed — including Brit's prominent role in Guarding the Globe and his later television adaptation. The issue also represents a deliberate creative handoff: Kirkman stepped back to an editorial role and entrusted the writing to newcomer Bruce Brown, making it a notable example of the creator-owned ecosystem at Image incubating new voices within an established property.

The character debuted in July 2003, conceived by Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore as a grizzled, near-invulnerable American super-soldier operating within the same world as Invincible. Three one-shots — Brit (2003), Brit: Cold Death (2003), and Brit: Red, White, Black and Blue (2004) — established the mythology; those were collected in the trade paperback Brit, Vol. 1: Old Soldier in March 2007, just months before the ongoing launched. For the ongoing series beginning with this August 2007 issue, Kirkman handed scripting duties to Bruce Brown while retaining an editorial and oversight role, and brought Cliff Rathburn — already a collaborator on the one-shots and the greyscale colorist for The Walking Dead — aboard as the ongoing's principal artist through issue #6, marking Rathburn's debut as a full ongoing-series artist.
