About this Issue

Brigade vol. 2 #6 (cover-dated December 1993) marks the first appearances of Coral and Worlok within the Extreme Universe, expanding the underwater mythology of Rob Liefeld's corner of Image Comics during a period when that shared world was still being actively constructed. As the final 1993 issue of the series and the conclusion of the book's initial publishing year, it brings the team into a subterranean setting — 'A World Below' — that contrasted with the street-level government-conspiracy plotting of the 'Blood Brothers' arc that opened the ongoing series. The book sits within the dense ecosystem of Extreme Studios output, a studio that, despite its narrative sprawl, was actively introducing new characters at a pace few publishers matched in the early 1990s.

In "A World Below," Roman and the Brigade descend into the besieged underwater city of Neuport, where Seahawk and Coldsnap face a shocking revelation— their father is alive. With the invading Worlock forces closing in, Battlestone makes a desperate choice, allowing the ancient wizard Trident to possess him in a bid to unite their powers. Written by Eric Stephenson and Marat Mychaels, with inks by Norm Rapmund and colors by In Color and Paul Mounts, the issue’s cover by Marat Mychaels and Art Thibert captures the tension of a world beneath the waves.

History

Brigade vol. 2 was created by Rob Liefeld and artist Marat Mychaels as an ongoing Youngblood spin-off, launching in mid-1993 after a notoriously delay-plagued four-issue miniseries that had taken a full year to complete. Eric Stephenson served as scripter throughout the early run, with Liefeld handling plotting and the overall Extreme Universe continuity. Mychaels, who had no major credits before Brigade, was one of Image's earliest recruits and handled art and cover duties consistently across the title's 1993 issues, including #6.
