Boys' and Girls' March of Comics #127
In "The Black Stone," Delaware youths Tall Buck and Red Hawk venture into Iroquois territory across Lake Champlain in search of rare arrow-stone, facing ambush and cunning evasion. When Red Hawk is wounded and the pair narrowly escape, he spots a mysterious black stone used by an elderly warrior to craft arrowheads. Using a clever ruse involving a skunk’s scent, Red Hawk slips into the lodge under cover of night and steals the stone, bringing it back to his people. Written by Gaylord Du Bois, this gripping tale blends adventure and cultural detail in a 1955 Western comic, with a cover by the same artist.

Tall Buck and Red Hawk, two Delaware youths searching for good arrow-stone, head into enemy Iroquois territory across Lake Champlain. Beset by enemy braves in a four-man canoe, Red Hawk takes an arrow in the shoulder, but the wind hastens escape. Overlooking an Iroquois village, Red Hawk sees an elderly warrior outside his lodge chipping arrowheads from a shining block of black stone. Red Hawk, skunk-sprayed, deceives the enemy into thinking their dogs are barking at a skunk. He steals into the lodge at night and takes the block of arrow-stone, which the two deliver to their Delaware tribe.
