Books of Magic #1

History

Neil Gaiman personally selected novelist Kat Howard to write the series, citing her handling of magic in her prose fiction — she had contributed to an anthology he co-edited and had known him since the 2008 Clarion Writers Workshop, where he served as an instructor. DC Vertigo editor Molly Mahan brought Howard on board as part of the broader Sandman Universe initiative, which was announced in March 2018 and formally launched with The Sandman Universe #1 one-shot in August of that year; Books of Magic #1 followed on October 24, 2018. The creative team was rounded out by artist Tom Fowler, colorist Jordan Boyd, and letterer Todd Klein, with Kai Carpenter providing the main cover and Joshua Middleton a variant; the series began under Vertigo before migrating to DC Black Label with issue #14, and ran for 23 issues total before concluding in late 2020 — caught in Vertigo's broader wind-down as DC discontinued the imprint.
