The story centers on Fone Bone's deepening bond with Thorn and the revelation of her hidden past, while Phoney Bone's greed and Smiley Bone's antics add comic relief to the escalating fantasy adventure. Originally serialized in black and white, this edition presents the tale in a vibrant format aimed at younger readers and new audiences.
In "Prologue: Stick-Eater," Jeff Smith delivers another chapter of the whimsical, offbeat adventure that defines Bone, with the story unfolding as Thorn departs Barrelhaven to confront the Red Dragon, while Fone and Smiley Bone aid a vulnerable baby Rat Creature in its escape. Phoney Bone, ever the opportunist, makes his exit with a caravan of loot, leaving the town behind in his wake. The entire issue is drawn, inked, and lettered by Jeff Smith, with coloring by Steve Hamaker, and the cover by Jeff Smith captures the tale’s quirky, adventurous spirit.
In "Chapter One: Business" from Bone #4, Gran'ma Ben, Thorn, and Bone set out on a journey to Barrelhaven, where Lucius finds himself on the losing end of a bet with Phoney Bone—though their argument takes a tense turn when Lucius warns Phoney not to speak of the Dragons.
In "Chapter Five: Deliver Us These Laws" from Bone #4, Lucius returns to the valley to find Fone Bone has uncovered Thorn's secret, setting the stage for a tense confrontation. As the Hooded One and Kindok declare their laws and gather their armies, the fragile peace of the valley begins to fracture.
In "Chapter Six: The Midsummer's Day Plan" from Bone #4, Phoney Bone takes control of the village, demanding all its wealth, while the Hooded One prepares a siege with a mysterious mission for the loyal Kindok. The tension builds as the village faces a crisis from within and an army from beyond.
In "Chapter Seven: The Turning" from Bone #4, Thorn ventures beyond Barrelhaven and encounters the legendary Red Dragon, setting a course that will test his courage and resolve. Meanwhile, Fone and Smiley Bone work together to free the baby Rat Creature from the village’s grasp, while Phoney Bone makes a hurried exit, loading up on whatever he can carry from the departing townsfolk.
