Blow Away #[nn]
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeBlow Away #1 introduced Brynne Brautigan — a wildlife videographer and genuinely original crime-comics protagonist — to readers, anchoring a complete five-issue neo-noir mystery that stands as one of BOOM! Studios' most cinematically ambitious standalone limited series of the 2020s. Writer Zac Thompson and artist Nicola Izzo used the hostile Arctic landscape of Baffin Island as an active narrative force rather than mere backdrop, pushing the panel-composition language of crime comics in a direction that critics noted felt closer to Hitchcock and De Palma than to conventional genre fare. The series engages pointedly with contemporary anxieties around post-truth culture and the unreliability of witnessed footage, grounding its thrills in a thematic question that resonates well beyond the genre: can a person whose entire profession is pattern-recognition actually trust their own eyes? That cultural underpinning, combined with a tightly self-contained arc that collected into a single 128-page volume, made it an exemplary modern specimen of the finite creator-owned series model BOOM! Studios has championed.

The series was announced in January 2024 and launched on April 17, 2024, with Thompson citing Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation as the creative seed he had been waiting years to plant in comic-book form. Thompson — a Prince Edward Island–based writer whose Marvel work on Ka-Zar and The Marvelous X-Men had established his mainstream credentials — brought the project to BOOM! Studios, where he had previously adapted the paranormal non-fiction novel Hunt for the Skinwalker. Izzo, a Turin-trained artist who had already collaborated with the publisher on Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer, brought a strongly cinematic page architecture to the collaboration; colorists Francesco Segala and Gloria Martinelli and letterer DC Hopkins of Andworld Design completed the production team. Series editor Elizabeth Brei shepherded all five issues, and the collected trade paperback — distributed through Simon & Schuster — arrived in January 2025.
