“Master of the Mold Monster”

A two-part thriller promised right on the cover, Blackhawk #212 delivers an unsettling premise: a mold-based transformation has gone catastrophically wrong, turning one of the Blackhawks into a snarling, shaggy creature that bursts forward in the lower half of the cover while his stunned teammates look on in alarm. Dick Dillin's pencils and Charles Cuidera's inks lay out the mayhem in a clever multi-panel design, complete with crackling energy effects and the declaration that "the Blackhawks face their greatest foe!" Bob Haney's "Master of the Mold Monster" looks like exactly the kind of imaginative, pulpy science-fiction adventure that made DC's 1965 lineup so much fun.
