Black Magic #40 is an anthology issue containing at least two stories. "The Intruders" depicts humanity's first moon landing in a domed lunar base, where men must decide whether to evacuate or stay as moon-men approach their settlement. "Flight" follows Willie Grant, a dock worker who dreams of escaping his mundane life and agrees with a man named Joe to steal a ship and venture elsewhere, only to encounter mysterious beings that cause their vessel to fall from the sky. "Writing Machine" tells of Caleb Winslow, a struggling writer who rents a typewriter claiming it will help him write a bestselling story, but his false pride and refusal of the machine's supernatural aid lead to his downfall, leaving him to lament his missed opportunity for fame and fortune.
