The story follows Jefferson Pierce as he returns to the superhero life after a long hiatus, facing a new generation of threats in his hometown of Metropolis while grappling with his legacy as a hero and educator. The volume also includes a backup story from Black Lightning #1 (1977) and a cover gallery featuring art by John Giang and others.
In "Cold Dead Hands, Part One: Ready to Do It All Over," Black Lightning faces a deadly escalation when White Thunder ambushes a convoy carrying the Simmons family to a court hearing, leading to tragic chaos and the wrongful death of Rick and Abigail Simmons. With the surviving Simmons boys on the run and armed with one of White Thunder’s weapons, Black Lightning must protect them from both the police and the relentless threat of the masked assailant. Written by Tony Isabella and illustrated with intensity by Clayton Henry—whose dynamic art is echoed in the cover by Henry and Mark Morales—this gripping issue sets a tense, high-stakes tone for the story ahead.
Jefferson Pierce is back in Cleveland, stepping once more into the role of Black Lightning, but the city he returns to feels colder, darker. Tobias Whale is pulling strings from the shadows, framing the hero for a string of violent killings that threaten to tear the community apart.
In the wake of a city under siege by dangerous tech, Black Lightning balances his vigilante duties with a hard-hitting stop at the school where he teaches—where a drug dealer’s presence threatens to unravel the fragile peace he’s trying to protect.
In "Cold Dead Hands, Part Three: Li'l Boys Bang Bang," the fallout from White Thunder’s attack on the Simmons family convoy spirals into chaos when the police mistakenly kill Rick and Abigail Simmons, leaving their sons to flee in fear with one of their attacker’s weapons. Black Lightning races to protect the boys as they’re hunted by both the law and the relentless White Thunder, who’s not done with the Simmons’ story.
In "Cold Dead Hands, Part Four: They Don't Know Who the Terror Is," Black Lightning teams up with the Cleveland police to take down White Thunder and his gang, only to find himself on the wrong side of the law for his efforts. As tensions rise, Miss Pequod carries out Tobias Whale’s ruthless orders, eliminating anyone who dares oppose him.
In "Cold Dead Hands, Part Five: Watch 'Em Kill Each Other," Black Lightning races to track down Tobias Whale as the city struggles to heal, only to be blindsided when Whale disables his powers and overpowers him in a brutal, unexpected confrontation.
In the final chapter of "Cold Dead Hands," Black Lightning faces one last challenge as Cleveland begins to heal after Tobias Whale’s arrest. With the city on the mend, Jo and the team must confront a final twist that tests everything they’ve fought for—no easy answers, just the hard work of rebuilding.
