Eagle Plume, breeder of "buffalo horses", dreams of making Black Fury one of his herd and seeing him breed many great horses in his image. But Fury proves elusive, and Plume's father warns him that alone, he may be the target of white men, and if killed it could lead to a war. Sure enough, a couple of angry cowboys take shots at him, wounding him and scaring off his horse. But Fury arrives and shows Plume a hidden watering hole known only the the wild horses, saving his life. In return, Eagle Plume considers Fury his "brother" and gives up the hunt.
