When Billy reaches Fort Riley before noon to contact Andrews, he discovers that Monk and his men have stolen army guns and ammunition, leading Billy to pursue them. Billy engages Monk in combat and defeats him, then works with Native Americans and local forces to stop the outlaw gang's activities. The story concludes with Billy putting Monk on a horse to send him home, having resolved the conflict.
