The issue went on sale June 10, 1965, with an August 1965 cover date, and was published under the Close-Up Inc. imprint — Archie Comics' newsstand distribution vehicle — with John L. Goldwater serving as editor and Richard H. Goldwater as managing editor. Cover art and primary interior pencils are attributed to Dan DeCarlo, the artist most closely associated with defining the visual grammar of the Archie line in the Silver Age; DeCarlo would ultimately work on 151 issues of the series over its run. The Grand Comics Database notes that at least some short filler stories inside the issue appear, judging by art style, to be reprints of material from the 1950s, meaning the debut issue was partly assembled from the publisher's back-catalogue rather than being entirely new production — a common Archie editorial practice of the era.
