Anna and Lukin develop a romantic and sexual relationship. Fighting intensifies as Third Squad joins the army trying to break though to German troops trapped at Stalingrad. Lukin and the entire fighter squadron are killed in one action. Anna and Zoya are shot down, with Zoya killed, in Third Squad's sector. Reviving his humanity, Graf captures and conceals Anna in hopes of saving her. She stabs him in the back, steals his machine gun, wipes out his squad, takes the Feldwebel's coat, and sets off back to her lines through a snowstorm.
