The story follows the reporter and the soldier through their initial meeting with a sympathetic Colonel, their move forward with the combat outfit, and the soldier's struggle with fear as artillery shells begin to fall. After the shelling stops and the green line advances, the reporter makes his way to the forward observation post where he encounters an officer dealing with a patrol unable to secure artillery support, ending with the reporter borrowing binoculars to observe the action.
