Batman : souriez ! #[nn]
This French-language collection from J'ai Lu reprints the classic Batman storyline 'Souriez !' (Smile!), featuring the Joker's return to Gotham City. The volume includes the crossover event 'A Death in the Family' storyline, where the Joker brutally attacks Jason Todd, the second Robin. This edition collects issues from the early 1990s Batman series, focusing on the Clown Prince of Crime's reign of terror.
In this 1990 J'ai Lu edition of Batman: Souriez !, Alan Moore and Brian Bolland deliver a chilling, meticulously drawn tale where Batman confronts a Joker who’s not quite who he seems. When the Caped Crusader visits Arkham Asylum only to find the Joker replaced by a convincing double, the real villain strikes at the heart of Gotham—abducting Commissioner Gordon and trapping him in a twisted carnival of psychological torment. The cover by Brian Bolland, with its stark, iconic imagery, perfectly captures the issue’s eerie tone, while the story unfolds with a rare blend of dread and dark humor, culminating in a final, unsettling joke that lingers long after the last page.

Batman visits the Joker in Arkham Asylum only to discover he has been replaced by a double. As Batman attempts to track the villain down, the Joker shows up at the house of Commissioner Gordon where he promptly shoots Barbara and captures her father. The Joker takes Jim to a modified carnival where he tries to drive him mad (partially by showing him pictures of his naked and bleeding daughter). Batman arrives and starts beating on the Joker who attempts to reason with him in his own insane fashion. As things wrap up and the police arrive, the Joker finally tells Batman a joke that he gets.
