Batman looms large against a massive golden moon on this September 1996 cover, his cape swept dramatically to one side while a swirling streak of toxic green — unmistakably suggestive of the Joker's grin — encircles the Bat-symbol overhead. It's a striking visual setup for "Conspiracy Part 1," the opening chapter of a three-part arc brought to life by writer Doug Moench with cover art penciled by J. H. Williams III and inked by Mick Gray. If this cover is any indication, the Dark Knight is about to face something that goes well beyond a routine night in Gotham.
