Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #112

Batman looms large through a porthole-shaped frame, cape billowing and fists clenched against a blazing backdrop of fire and destruction — it's a striking image that sets an ominous nautical tone for "Shipwreck Part One." The cover art by Norman Felchle and Frank Cirocco uses that circular, bolted viewport to isolate the Dark Knight with real dramatic tension, flames reflected below him suggesting something has gone very wrong at sea. Dan Vado kicks off this two-part story in the November 1998 issue of Legends of the Dark Knight, a series always willing to push Batman into grittier, more atmospheric corners of his world.
