Batman: Haunted Gotham #4

This DC Elseworlds miniseries wraps up with a cover that pulls no punches: Batman hangs inverted, cape splayed wide, clutching an axe as he's drawn into — or perhaps torn from — a massive portal framed in skulls and pulsing with iridescent, otherworldly light. The image perfectly captures the supernatural dread at the heart of this darker-than-dark reimagining of Gotham, rendered with visceral intensity by penciller Kelley Jones and inker John Beatty.
