Batman: Gotham County Line #2
The second chapter of Steve Niles and Scott Hampton's three-part horror series puts Batman in a genuinely unsettling spot — surrounded on all sides by a seething mass of decaying undead, their grasping hands closing in from every direction while the Dark Knight stands his ground at the center of the chaos. Hampton's painted cover work gives the scene a murky, atmospheric dread that suits "Book Two: Death's Highway" perfectly, with José Villarrubia's coloring bathing the horde in sickly amber tones that contrast sharply with Batman's familiar grey and blue. If you enjoy Batman pushed into full-on horror territory, this 2006 miniseries delivers that tension in spades.
