Tim Sale's cover for issue #3 of this 13-part Jeph Loeb saga is a study in pure atmosphere — an almost entirely black canvas broken only by golden silhouettes, with Batman's caped form looming large overhead while two smaller figures crouch in the shadows below. The stark black-and-gold palette gives "Toys" an unsettling, predatory tension that feels right at home in Gotham's noir-drenched streets. A compelling chapter in one of DC's most visually distinctive Batman stories from 2000.
