Batman Beyond #1
Batman Beyond #1 (March 1999) marks the first appearance of Terry McGinnis and the futuristic Batman mythos in comic book form, translating the then-brand-new animated series — itself a bold creative gamble that placed a teenager rather than Bruce Wayne under the cowl — onto the printed page within weeks of the show's television debut. The issue proved that the Batman concept could be meaningfully passed to a successor without losing its core emotional weight, a narrative argument that DC would keep revisiting for the next two-plus decades across multiple ongoing series, New 52 stories, and DC Rebirth titles. Unlike most TV tie-in comics, it arrived at the precise cultural moment its source material was generating real audience excitement, making it a genuine time-capsule document of the late-1990s DCAU at its creative peak. Terry McGinnis himself — born entirely outside traditional comics — would eventually cross into mainstream DC continuity and spawn his own sprawling publication history, all of which traces back to the pages of this issue.

The animated series that spawned this comic was created by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett, and Glen Murakami, premiering on Kids' WB on January 10, 1999; DC moved quickly to capitalize on the show's momentum, launching the six-issue miniseries just ten days later, on January 20, 1999. Scripter Hilary J. Bader, penciler Rick Burchett, and inker Terry Beatty handled the interior adaptation of the pilot episode, while Bruce Timm himself provided cover art — keeping the visual DNA of the animated series intact on the stands. The first issue carried an unusual editorial addition: a tribute to Bob Kane (1915–1998) written by DC publisher Jenette Kahn, lending the launch issue a poignant connection to Batman's deepest history even as it opened his future. The miniseries ran from March to August 1999, deliberately timed to bridge the gap between the animated show's first and second seasons, and its success fed directly into a 24-issue ongoing series that launched in November 1999.
