Volume 5 of Bakemono no Yawadukushi arrives with a cover that's equal parts eerie and sumptuous — a sharp-eyed young man in dark clothing carries an enormous blade while a skeletal, kimono-clad figure writhes beside him, all set against a richly patterned backdrop of hanging floral lanterns and scattered golden petals. The palette of deep purples, warm oranges, and flashes of green flame gives the whole composition a haunted, otherworldly atmosphere that perfectly suits a series steeped in yokai folklore.
