About this Collection

This third volume of John Allison's Bad Machinery series collects the story arc 'The Case of the Simple Soul,' following the student detectives of Griswald's Grammar School as they investigate a mysterious new girl who seems to have an unsettling influence on those around her. The volume continues the series' blend of supernatural mystery and British schoolyard humor, with the young sleuths navigating both adolescent social dynamics and a genuinely eerie case.

In "The Case of the Simple Soul," John Allison crafts a warm, clever mystery where the kids of Bad Machinery take on a town-wide panic sparked by a series of arsons—and a misunderstood troll. With the tone balancing humor and heart, the story finds the group stepping in when an angry mob targets the gentle giant, leading to a surprising resolution and a new partnership with the fire department. The full art and inks by John Allison bring the quirky world to life, making this a standout entry in the series.
