Backlash #12 (1995) delivers a high-stakes escalation as the titular hero finally reunites with Taboo—only to face a surprising twist when she pushes Jodi to don a superhero costume. With Branum’s enforcers Serge and Mahkino in their way, the duo is caught in a brutal fight that spirals further when Lilitu and her forces descend. Just as the battle reaches its peak, Backlash begins to collapse, his body failing under the strain. Written by Sean Ruffner and Brett Booth, with art by Brett Booth and inks by Chuck Gibson and Rick Bryant, the issue’s cover by Brett Booth and Chuck Gibson captures the chaos in sharp, dynamic detail.

Backlash finally convinces Taboo to come back and work with him. He is not amused, however, when she encourages Jodi to put on a costume and play at being a superhero. Backlash and Taboo go after Branum but have to battle his bodyguards, Serge and Mahkino. In the midst of the battle, Lilitu and her forces show up and start wreaking havoc. To make matters even worse, Backlash seizes up and starts to die.
