“Angel Errant Part One: The Descent”

Azrael faces overwhelming odds in this May 1997 entry to Dennis O'Neil's ongoing series, with cover art by Barry Kitson (inked by James Pascoe) depicting the armored hero wielding a flaming gauntlet and a sword against a swarm of skeleton warriors inside what appears to be a grim, stone-walled dungeon. The subtitle "Mansion of Death!" sets an appropriately ominous tone as Azrael battles the skeletal horde closing in from every angle. It's a viscerally striking cover that makes "Angel Errant Part One: The Descent" feel like exactly the kind of dark, propulsive chapter the title does so well.
