“Arena”

Part of DC's 1995 "Underworld Unleashed" crossover, this issue of Azrael brings a genuinely unsettling cover by Barry Kitson and James Pascoe: a massive, red-eyed armored villain looms over a nighttime cityscape, his razor-sharp metallic claws dominating the composition while Batman, Robin, and a dark-haired woman stand dwarfed in the foreground below. The contrast between those small, grounded figures and the towering threat above them sets a wonderfully ominous tone for Dennis O'Neil's "Arena." It's a striking visual package from a creative team — O'Neil, Kitson, and Pascoe — clearly firing on all cylinders.
