“The Eyes of Mala-Tor”

In "The Eyes of Mala-Tor," a desperate thief hides a stolen good luck statue at the base of a tree, only to return and find the tree itself transformed into the statue—now alive and holding him captive. Written and illustrated by Bernard Baily with lettering by Artie Simek, this eerie 1957 tale from Marvel unfolds with a chilling twist, as the statue’s owner demands the thief’s release, leaving the police to take him into custody. The cover by Bill Everett captures the moment’s unsettling tension, making this a standout entry in the series’ early years.
