Archie's Weird Mysteries #17

The cover of this 2001 Archie Comics issue says it all — Archie and his friends are fleeing in panic outside a grocery store as a trio of large, cartoonish monster creatures (a pink pig-like beast, a blue fanged creature, and a red duck-billed critter with sunglasses) loom menacingly overhead. The speech bubbles nail the playful premise perfectly: one monster declares "Gotta snatch 'em all!" while Archie quips about finally knowing "how comic book characters feel." Fernando Ruiz's pencils and Rich Koslowski's inks bring a wonderfully energetic chaos to this clever riff on the collectible-monster craze that was very much in the cultural air in 2001.
