Arthur discovers that Mera has penetrated the Crown of Thorns to enter Atlantis, but has become ill and is unable to breathe water. Reverend Mother Cetea helps treat Mera, but she must get to the surface within ten hours to recover or she will die. Reverend Mother Cetea also reveals that Mera has been chosen to be the new queen of Atlantis once Rath is overthrown. Mera and Arthur discuss how their happiness together must come second to her duty to Atlantis. Arthur leads the rebels on a mission to bring down the Crown of Thorns in order to get Mera to the surface so that she can survive.
