The Rat King saves Anita from a were-rat who is menacing her. Anita is taken for an audience with the head Vampire of St. Louis, Nikolaos. Nikolaos pressures Anita into investigating the vampire murders taking place around the city if Anita ever wants her best friend taken out from under another vampire's thrall. As the meeting turns violent, Anita and Zachary run while Jean-Claude covers there escape. On the way out of the building, Anita is met by Valentine.
